So, you want to enjoy some great nights out in this cold economic climate? Here's a list of just some of the places where you can catch free or cheap music and drinks in Paris right now...
Le Fleche d’Or
www.flechedor.fr/
102 bis, rue de Bagnolet 75020 Paris
This spacious bar is perched over railroad tracks and boasts a lounge-styled restaurant. There is a decent sized stage and some pretty well known groups can be seen. The style of music varies from folk to metal to pop. A 5 euro fee is obligatory, but that gets you a drink coupon for the similarly priced beverages. If you have the courage to stay on late, DJs pick up when the concerts end, mixing a wide array of tunes.
Le Motel

8, passage Josset 75011 Paris
This bar has become very popular with the hip 20something crowd, who flock here to see Indie rock and folk groups perform on the tiny makeshift stage. The crowded scene may have to do with the happy hour till 9pm offering drinks for 3.50euros and comfy couches hidden in the darkly lit corners. This place is worth going to check out the fashions as much as the music.
L’Opa
www.opa-paris.com/
9, rue Biscornet 75012 Paris
With colored liquid lamps and film projections on a blank wall, this music venue has a very space age feel. Fortunately, the loud music and boisterous crowd bring you back down to earth. Not the best place for an intimate chat with friends, but this place does feature some of the best local pop and rock talent. The drinks aren’t too pricey either, starting at 4euros.
Le Pop In
www.popin.fr/
105, rue Amelot 75011 Paris
This bar looks pretty small when you first walk in, with a couple chairs and a big bar dominating the first room. However, there is a narrow staircase to the right that leads you up to two lounge areas and then back down to another little room where the concerts are held. The concert room is small which makes for a nice intimate gathering, but it can also get rather hot and sweaty. The crowd is young and trendy in a thrift store/vintage way. Drinks start at 2.50euros.
Le Troll
27, rue Cotte 75012 Paris
Specializing in blues with occasional folk or rock concerts, Le Troll is a great neighborhood pub. The shows are held in the front room with the bar in the back. Often you find groups of friends spread throughout, enjoying plates of cheese and sausage before the performance begins. Several different beers are available, including some tasty Belgian beers and the house brew was only 3 euros last time I was there. Check your Lylo as there are concerts almost every night, but no website.
Le Vieux Leon
www.myspace.com/levieuxleon
18, rue de La Grande Truanderie 75001 Paris
Not far from the busy rue Saint-Denis and Les Halles atmosphere, Le Vieux Leon is a little alcove of rock, pop and folk concerts. The concerts are held in the front section by the bar, so go early if you want a good seat. There are sausage and cheese plates, which makes for a nice apertif while you wait for the shows to start. Drinks start at 3.50euros.
