It bears the title of Sydney's narrowest pub, but there's always room to pull up a barstool and find a quirky character who's up for a chat.
The Lord Wolseley at Ultimo is tucked into a quant little pocket of Ultimo Village. If you're coming by car, it requires a Willy-Wonka-like patience with one way streets and confused GPS-es in order to find it. If you're coming by foot, look for Bulwara Rd as you head towards Glebe from the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, turn right and follow your feet.
Built in 1881, when Ultimo was a rough-and-ready quarry village supplying much of Australia with its beautiful Sydney Sandstone, the character of the pub has changed little in more than a hundred years. The advent of technology has seen the addition of a cute pokie room and a television in the corner (showing mostly the obligatory cricket or football); but there are also high bar stools; heritage green walls; non-sticky maroon carpet; and a lot of old blokes (and blokey sheilas!) sitting around or out the front under the wattle trees, catching up on a yarn or the local gossip.
All in all, when you also consider that you can also get a good meal for between $7 and $12 as well as a "lovingly kept" cold beer on tap, it's safe to say that while the Lord Wolseley may be one of Sydney's littlest pubs, it's got a great big heart.
