Buttes Aux Cailles - Happy Hour on the Hill

Hidden inside Paris is the charming village of Buttes aux Cailles where you can mix with locals and students for a casual, cheap, and condensed pub crawl along narrow cobble stone streets.

Without having to walk too far along rue de la Butte aux Cailles, you can find several bars boasting special rum punches, good beers on tap, and the occasional free appetizer between 5 and 8pm. The area is mostly filled with students due to its proximity to the universities, and they are the reason that the happy hours are so joyous.

Start with Le Merle Moqueur for their colorful and strong tea punch. The place is small but has a devoted clientele. Just next door at la Taverne de la Butte you can get a pint and plate of pâté smeared bread for four euros. This is the biggest of the bars with two floors and lots of paraphernalia on the walls. Then, walking South along rue de la Butte aux Cailles, you can stop at Chez Michel to watch sports on the huge screen TVs or continue to my personal favorite, la Folie en Tête, where old instruments hang from the walls and the Campus Blonde on tap is quite tasty.

After you have had your fill of cheap drinks, go down down rue des Cinq Dimants to one of the nearby restaurants to help you back to your senses. Chez Gladines is famous with the students for its copious and inexpensive French-Basque dishes, but be warned, long lines can form. If you can’t handle the wait, there is delicious couscous just across the street or head back to rue de la Buttes aux Cailles to the well loved and old fashioned restaurant, le Temps des Cerises. They don’t take reservations and don’t allow cell phones, but the quality is great for the price and the wine list is extensive.
